NUC representatives reportedly visited the university to evaluate its postgraduate programs, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Anieke noted that some first-class graduates found it challenging to write or speak in proper English, noting that the GOUNI had identified the usage of English as the major shortcoming of many graduates from other universities.
The VC stated that a university’s postgraduate program serves as the public face of the institution and, as such, reflects the strength of the university’s research enterprise through some of its postgraduate students.
“This is why we introduced a course we called “Communication in English“ and the students inability to use English language correctly could be due to their background.
In the PG School, we make sure that your thesis is solid enough to be published in a journal, and if it isn’t, Anieke explained, you haven’t produced a good thesis.
He emphasized that the university’s PG School policy was now bearing fruit in the school and that it was doing a lot of things to ensure that graduates were strong.
“You may not have a lot of students here because a lot of Nigerian students want it easy, but quality is very important to me,” he said.
In his words, the NUC visit was “a peer review that makes a university more transparent and effective,” not a witch hunt.
“NUC is championing national integration by sending those in charge of academics of the universities to institutions outside their regions.
“I see this as very important for the growth of our universities“, the vice chancellor stated.

Anieke advised the authorities to view the task, nonetheless, as a sacrifice for Nigeria’s progress, noting that the GOUNI had never undertaken a project without consulting the NUC.
Prof. Kabiru Dandago, who spoke in response on the team’s behalf, assured the audience that there would be no witch hunts conducted while the delegation was visiting campuses.
Dandago promised that they would carry out their responsibilities with a high degree of neutrality.
