The Peoples Democratic Party’s primary poll, which resulted in Hon. Jones Onyerere running as its senatorial candidate for Imo West in the February National Assembly election, was declared invalid by the Supreme Court on Friday in Abuja.
The primary election was declared invalid by the Supreme Court on the grounds that it was held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, rather than Orlu, where Imo West’s senatorial office is located.
In his ruling on the appeal brought by Hon. Nnamdi Ezeani, Justice Emmanuel Agim ruled that PDP had flagrantly broken Section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act by holding the primary poll somewhere other than the designated location.
Due to its failure to nominate a candidate by the deadline stipulated by law, the PDP was declared ineligible to run in the senatorial election scheduled for next month, according to the Supreme Court.
