Luka Doncic is intensifying a contentious legal dispute, but he is not going up against a well-known company or an ex-colleague in business. Doncic, though, is at odds with his own mother.
According to Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks player has requested that the “LUKA DONCIC 7” trademark be canceled with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His mother, Mirjam Poterbin, is in charge of the trademark and has resisted giving it up.
As a player and a person, Doncic said, “I have a lot to look forward to. It’s vital to me to control my own brand and focus on giving back to my community.”
Throughout his rookie season in 2018, Doncic gave his mother permission to register his name as a trademark. However, when he wrote to her company the previous year to request the release of the trademark, they refused.
Since then, Doncic has unveiled a new logo, which can be seen on his customized Jordan Brand shoes and apparel.
However, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office “preliminarily” rejected his application to register a new property under the name “Luka Doncic” because it conflicted with an older trademark that his mother already owned.
This has prompted him to act as a “last resort” to regain full control over his name, brand, charitable foundation, and business activities, as he explained to Stein.
