According to reports, the governors decided to support a southern candidate after Atiku was unable to convince Ayu to resign.
There have been rumors that the five disgruntled governors of the People’s Democratic Party may declare their support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s nominee for president, next month.
The choice of the governors, who are now in London, could be influenced by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recommendation that the South-East should produce the next president in 2023, according to The Punch.
The disgruntled PDP governors, including Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, Nyesom Wike of the Rivers state, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Samuel Ortom of Benue, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, had promised not to campaign for Atiku Abubakar, their party’s presidential nominee.
Following Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, refusing to step down as the governors had wanted, the governors and their supporters broke off their relationship with the PDP leadership.
The governors are also upset with Atiku for not pressuring Ayu to step down in order to balance the party’s leadership’s imbalance, which they claim is too pro-north.
Even though Atiku and the offended governors met numerous times to try to end the problem, Ayu’s refusal to resign cut short the efforts at reconciliation.
The governors had previously stated that they will choose a presidential candidate and announce it in January.
He advocated for Obi at their most recent meeting in London because justice and fairness require that the South-East provide the next president.
The insider added that the governors would probably announce their choice for president on January 5, 2022.
According to all signs, the governors will choose their favored candidate the next week.
They would make the announcement in Ibadan on January 5 if there is no significant incident before Makinde launches his campaign, the source said.
The source denied rumors that there was disagreement among the governors on which presidential candidate to support.
He claimed that since Atiku was unable to get Ayu to resign, the governors had decided to support a southern candidate.
