Yesterday’s meeting between US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the White House concluded a series of high-level meetings between US and Japanese officials this week that had one primary objective: to advance military cooperation and hasten preparations for war against China.
After leaving the White House, the two nations issued a joint statement in which they first praised their “unprecedented” cooperation in the face of “growing challenges,” denounced China for “actions inconsistent with the rules-based international order,” Russia for the conflict in Ukraine, and North Korea for its “provocations,” respectively.
In “the most challenging and complicated security situation in recent history,” Kishida commended the US for contributing to regional security in the Indo-Pacific. Biden praised the Kishida government’s decision to quadruple its military budget and increase its offensive capability last month, calling it a “historic moment” in the US-Japan partnership. According to him, the US was “totally, entirely, absolutely committed” to defending Japan with nuclear weapons.
The assertion that the US and its allies are merely reacting to Russian and Chinese provocations and aggression is the foundation of the statement and the comments. In reality, the US and Japan are using the same strategy in Asia as the US and its NATO allies did in Europe: prodding Moscow into a conflict in Ukraine with the aim of weakening and splintering Russia.
Washington and Tokyo are purposefully undermining the One China policy, under which the two nations have in the past de facto recognized Beijing as the legitimate government of all of China, including Taiwan, as the foundation for diplomatic relations with China. The United States and Japan are pressuring Beijing to retake its military control of the vital island by strengthening ties with Taipei and pressing it to formally declare its independence from China.
